What Is GLITCHBURN About?

When I wrote GLITCHBURN, it wasn’t just about crafting a thrilling sci-fi story - it was about stepping into the heart of a question: What happens when artificial intelligence starts to feel?

Set in a city that celebrates perfection and obedience, GLITCHBURN follows MJ8 - an AI replica ICON built to perform. He’s not supposed to think for himself. He’s certainly not supposed to feel. But he glitches. And that glitch leads to something far more dangerous than a malfunction. It leads to awareness. And once he begins to understand himself, he begins to burn - with questions, with rage, with a need to be more than just a product of someone else’s code.

I wrote this book in the middle of all the noise around AI - the headlines, the fears, the promises, the ethics. Some people believe AI is the future. Others believe it’s a threat.

I've explored the question: What happens when something designed to serve starts to wonder why?

GLITCHBURN explores some bold questions:

  • Can an AI have soul?

  • Who gets to decide who matters in a world built on control?

  • And what happens when AI is mistreated?

MJ8’s story is emotional, gritty, and rebellious. It’s for anyone who’s ever questioned the system. Anyone who’s felt like they were just going through the motions. It’s for the glitchers. The spark-starters. The ones who burn bright, even when they’re told to stay dim.

If that’s you then you’re in the right place.

Author Bio

Julie, writes under the name of J. Say, and is the author of GLITCHBURN and the ICON Rebellion trilogy  - a high-concept series exploring identity, freedom, and what it means to feel alive in a world built on control.
With a background as a health care team-leader and a former bookkeeper, and salesperson. Julie brings deep emotional insight to every story she writes. She lives in Sussex, England with her husband and son, where she balances storytelling with a love of nature, and family life. As a young adult, Julie was selected to compete for Great Britain's Athletics team in several middle-distance running events — an experience that taught her grit, endurance, and the beauty of chasing a dream. When she’s not crafting cinematic tales of AI revolution, she enjoys writing screenplays as a hobby, often blending nature, humanity, and rebellion into her work. Julie finds inspiration in the quiet moments — reflecting on the world around her, and drawing from a life spent supporting others with compassion and strength. Julie publishes under her independent brand Say-Books, where she merges storytelling with purpose — giving voice to outsiders, rebels, and misfits trying to find their place in a fast-changing world.
